Gaffey Hyprolyser systems solve hypochlorite production problems

The difficulties involved in shipping and storing hazardous chlorine products can pose many challenges for organisations needing to generate a reliable supply of high-quality hypochlorite for water disinfection purposes. Safety concerns often prompt shipping operators and marine insurers to restrict the size and frequency of chemical deliveries, and this can create serious problems with conventional disinfection techniques. Fortunately, an alternative solution is available, and it's one that has proven its ability to produce hypochlorite for swimming pools and manufacturing plants in many diverse locations around the world.

Over the past decade, water treatment specialist Gaffey Technical Services has developed its extensive range of Hyprolyser® electrochlorination systems. One of the prime drivers behind this process has been the fact that traditional water disinfection solutions require regular deliveries of chlorine solutions which must be stored on site. Recognising that this can present a dangerous hazard to maintenance and handling staff, Gaffey created an alternative which uses only salt, water and electrical energy to generate high-quality hypochlorite solution, safely, in-situ, and on demand.

The Hyprolyser® system eliminates the need for frequent deliveries of dangerous chemicals to often-remote locations. It uses salt which can be shipped and stored without any restrictions, and without the use of refrigerated containers. It offers a reliable and thoroughly proven solution which has become well-established in the UK commercial swimming pool market, and has now gone on to build an impressive record of international sales,

This international success has been driven by the growth of the Gaffey installer network, and has led to Hyprolyser® units being despatched around the world. Gaffey's manufacturing plant and company headquarters in Accrington, UK now sends Hyprolyser® units to customers in such diverse locations as Australia, Peru and Taiwan.

The remote island of St Helena in the South Atlantic is one such location, which has seen four Hyprolyser® 280 systems installed for use in drinking water disinfection processes. This was part of a project to provide reliable extra disinfection capacity, in anticipation of a growth in tourism which would be generated by the island's new airport.

This success also led to another Hyprolyser® 280 system being installed on the island. This is now serving the St Helena's Jamestown Swimming Pool, which recently underwent a large refurbishment project carried out by Barr & Wray Ltd. The use of salt is ideal for the conditions on St Helena, as it has an infinite shelf life despite the warm, humid climate on the island, and it can be imported and stored safely, allowing the Hyprolyser® to generate a constant supply of hypochlorite.The Hyprolyser® is ideal for this type of location as it also eliminates the problem of the significant chlorine losses that can occur when storing hypochlorites in warm climates.

Hyprolyser® systems have also solved similar chemical delivery and storage challenges in Australia. Perth-based Westwater Pty installed the systems at various drinking water treatment sites, including Australia's first off-grid Tesla solar and battery-powered water treatment works, at Round Mountain Reservoir near Brisbane.

Hyprolyser® systems are now also set to make their mark in Canada, where they are being imported by Gaffey's Canadian partner, Pinnacle Aquatics Inc of Calgary, Alberta. Using salt to generate chlorine is not a new concept in Canada, where in-line electrochlorination systems have been popular for many years due to their reliability. However, the harsh Canadian winters can make chemical and service delivery by road a difficult challenge, especially to remote locations, and this can be a significant consideration when a swimming pool facility could be hundreds of kilometres from the nearest service and supply company.

Using salt as the raw material for the Hyprolyser® chlorination process creates the opportunity for Canadian customers to benefit from bulk deliveries which can last a whole year, making it an economically attractive and far safer alternative to storing large amounts of chlorine-based chemicals.

The Hyprolyser® system's off-line method of hypochlorite production also offers other major advantages in terms of the of extended warranty it carries, plus the reduced maintenance costs and service requirements involved.
