Carbon dioxide may be used for pH correction in swimming pools as a safer alternative to mineral acids, reducing chemical handling and the risk of accidents. For CO2 gas to work efficiently and be economically viable for the pool operator the total alkalinity level of the pool water should be maintained at a maximum of 120mg/l. Unlike mineral acids, CO2 does not reduce the alkalinity of water.
With carbon dioxide gas being heavier than air, CO2 installations require special safety considerations; ease of access for gas deliveries, extract/ ventilation (particularly below ground level) and a gas detection alarm in the event of leakage. A range of CO2 dosing and control equipment is available from Gaffey to meet all types of installation requirements.
